Firmware Update Failed
Recover from a failed firmware update (stuck purple LED).
2 min read
If your Operator’s LED is stuck on purple, a firmware update may have stalled or failed. Here’s how to recover.
Important warning
Do not disconnect the device if an update might still be in progress. Wait at least 5 minutes before taking any action — the update may still be running.
Step 1: Assess the situation
A purple LED normally indicates a firmware update in progress:
- Expected: You initiated an update and the LED turned purple
- Unexpected: The LED is purple but you didn’t start an update
If you didn’t initiate an update, the process may have started automatically and encountered an issue.
Step 2: Ensure a direct connection
USB hubs and adapters can interrupt the update process:
- Disconnect the Operator
- Connect it directly to your computer (no hub or adapter)
- Try the update again
Step 3: Restart Playback
- Disconnect the Operator from your computer
- Close Playback completely
- Relaunch Playback
- Reconnect the Operator
- Attempt the update again if prompted
Step 4: Try a different computer
If the update continues to fail:
- Download Playback on another computer
- Connect the Operator to that computer
- Attempt the update there
A fresh system can sometimes resolve the issue.
What to avoid
- Don’t disconnect during an active update (purple LED actively changing)
- Don’t force restart your computer during an update
- Don’t use USB hubs or adapters during firmware updates
If recovery fails
If you’ve waited, tried different computers, and the device is still stuck:
- Document what happened
- Note your OS and computer model
If recovery isn’t possible, you can file a warranty claim below.
