Controller Rebinding Issues

Troubleshoot controller problems when rebinding buttons.

2 min read

Having trouble rebinding your controller? Here’s how to resolve common issues with different controller types.

Steam Deck®

The Steam Deck defaults to “Desktop” mode where buttons have different functions. To use it as a gamepad:

  1. Long-press the menu/start button (☰)
  2. The controller switches to “Gamepad” mode
  3. In Playback’s Input settings, select “Steam Virtual Gamepad”

Mode-switching controllers (8BitDo, Logitech, etc.)

Many modern controllers can switch between input modes:

Common modes

  • DInput (Direct Input) — Older standard, wide compatibility
  • XInput — Emulates Xbox controller layout
  • Switch Mode — Mimics Nintendo® Switch Pro controller
  • Keyboard Mode — Maps buttons to keyboard keys
  1. Start with DInput mode for broadest compatibility
  2. Check your controller’s manual for mode-switching instructions
  3. Connect the controller to your PC
  4. Go to Playback’s Input settings and rebind controls
  5. If issues persist, try a different mode

Controller not detected

If your controller isn’t showing up in Playback at all:

  1. Verify it’s connected and recognized by your OS
  2. Try a different USB port
  3. Restart Playback with the controller connected
  4. Your controller may need a custom mapping — see Adding Unsupported Controllers

Buttons mapped incorrectly

If buttons work but are mapped wrong:

  1. Go to Settings > Controls
  2. Select your controller
  3. Click Rebind Keys
  4. Follow the prompts to remap each button
  5. Test the new mappings

Tips

  • Connect your controller before launching Playback
  • Use wired connections for most reliable detection
  • Some wireless controllers work better in specific modes
  • Check controller firmware updates from the manufacturer
