Controller Rebinding Issues
Troubleshoot controller problems when rebinding buttons.
2 min read
Having trouble rebinding your controller? Here’s how to resolve common issues with different controller types.
Steam Deck®
The Steam Deck defaults to “Desktop” mode where buttons have different functions. To use it as a gamepad:
- Long-press the menu/start button (☰)
- The controller switches to “Gamepad” mode
- In Playback’s Input settings, select “Steam Virtual Gamepad”
Mode-switching controllers (8BitDo, Logitech, etc.)
Many modern controllers can switch between input modes:
Common modes
- DInput (Direct Input) — Older standard, wide compatibility
- XInput — Emulates Xbox controller layout
- Switch Mode — Mimics Nintendo® Switch Pro controller
- Keyboard Mode — Maps buttons to keyboard keys
Recommended approach
- Start with DInput mode for broadest compatibility
- Check your controller’s manual for mode-switching instructions
- Connect the controller to your PC
- Go to Playback’s Input settings and rebind controls
- If issues persist, try a different mode
Controller not detected
If your controller isn’t showing up in Playback at all:
- Verify it’s connected and recognized by your OS
- Try a different USB port
- Restart Playback with the controller connected
- Your controller may need a custom mapping — see Adding Unsupported Controllers
Buttons mapped incorrectly
If buttons work but are mapped wrong:
- Go to Settings > Controls
- Select your controller
- Click Rebind Keys
- Follow the prompts to remap each button
- Test the new mappings
Tips
- Connect your controller before launching Playback
- Use wired connections for most reliable detection
- Some wireless controllers work better in specific modes
- Check controller firmware updates from the manufacturer
