Game Database

How Playback identifies and displays game information.

2 min read

When you insert a cartridge, Playback displays the game’s cover art, title, description, and other information.

What the database provides

When a game is recognized, Playback shows:

  • Cover artwork — The game’s box art or label
  • Title — The official game name
  • Description — A brief summary of the game
  • Developer — Who made the game
  • Release date — When the game was originally published
  • Review — Written by our team with a star rating

Database coverage

Our database covers:

  • All major Game Boy®, Game Boy Color®, and Game Boy Advance® releases
  • All major Super Nintendo® releases
  • Multiple regional variants (US, EU, JP, and more)
  • Many homebrew titles

We continuously expand the database with new entries.

Unrecognized games

If your game shows “Unknown title” or a question mark instead of artwork:

Why this happens

  • The game may be a regional variant we haven’t catalogued yet
  • It could be a less common or indie title
  • Homebrew games may not be in the database
  • Reproduction cartridges may have altered data

Can I still play?

Yes. Even if a game shows as unknown, you can still:

  • Play the game
  • Back up and restore saves
  • Use all Playback features

The database is for display purposes and doesn’t affect functionality.

Adding games to the database

Help us expand the database by submitting missing game information:

  1. Contact us with “Game Database Addition” in the subject
  2. Provide as much information as possible:
    • Game title
    • System (GB, GBC, GBA, SNES®)
    • Region
    • Developer and release year

We’ll add the game in a future database update.

Important: Please do not provide any copyrighted material for which you are not licensed to provide. Your email will be automatically deleted in that case, never reaching us.

For homebrew developers

If you’re a homebrew developer and want your game recognized:

  1. Follow the submission process above
  2. Include official artwork
  3. Let us know if there are multiple versions

We’re happy to add homebrew titles so they display properly for all users.
