Adding Unsupported Controllers
How to add support for controllers not automatically recognized by Playback.
2 min read
Most wired and wireless controllers work automatically with Playback. If your controller isn’t recognized, you can create a custom mapping and help us add support for it.
Creating a controller mapping
Use the SDL2 Gamepad Tool to generate a mapping for your controller:
- Download and install the SDL2 Gamepad Tool
- Connect your controller to your computer
- Launch the tool
- If multiple controllers are connected, select yours from the dropdown
If mapping is available
If the tool shows that mapping is already available, your controller should work. If it doesn’t work correctly in Playback, proceed to create a new mapping anyway.
If mapping is not available
- Click Make New Mapping
- Follow the on-screen instructions to map each button
- Test your mapping to ensure it’s correct
- Click Copy Mapping String
Sharing your mapping
Help us improve controller support by sharing your mapping:
- Copy the mapping string from the SDL2 Gamepad Tool
- Send it to us
- Include your controller’s make and model
We’ll add support for your controller in a future update, benefiting everyone with the same hardware.
Troubleshooting
If your controller still doesn’t work:
- Make sure it’s connected before launching Playback
- Try a different USB port or cable
- Check if the controller works in other applications
- For wireless controllers, ensure they’re properly paired
- Restart Playback after connecting the controller
Tips
- Wired connections are generally more reliable than wireless
- Some controllers require specific drivers — check the manufacturer’s website
- Gaming-specific controllers typically have better compatibility than generic ones
