Multiple Instances

Run multiple Playback windows for local multiplayer setups.

2 min read

Playback supports running multiple instances simultaneously, enabling local multiplayer setups and multi-device configurations.

Use cases

Local multiplayer

Set up multiple Operator devices for local co-op or competitive play:

  • Racing games with multiple players
  • Competitive puzzle games

Multi-device setups

Run several Operator devices at once for:

  • Testing homebrew on different cartridges
  • Comparing game versions
  • Streaming multiple games simultaneously

Setting up multiple instances

  1. Connect your first Operator device
  2. Launch Playback — it will connect to the first device
  3. Connect additional Operator devices
  4. Launch another instance of Playback
  5. Each instance will connect to an available device

Controller configuration

When running multiple instances, configure separate controllers for each:

  1. In each Playback window, open Settings
  2. Go to Controls
  3. Assign a different controller to each instance
  4. Or use keyboard controls for one instance and a controller for another

Performance tips

  • Each instance requires its own system resources
  • Close unnecessary applications when running multiple instances
  • Use wired connections for the most reliable performance
  • Ensure adequate USB bandwidth — use different USB controllers if possible

Limitations

  • Each Operator device can only be used by one Playback instance at a time
  • Audio from multiple instances plays simultaneously — adjust volume in each window as needed
  • Performance depends on your system’s capabilities
