Customize your gameplay with Super Game Boy borders and color palettes.

2 min read

Playback supports Super Game Boy® features including custom borders and color palettes, bringing the console experience to your desktop.

Note: This article applies to Game Boy® games played with the GB Operator.

Super Game Boy borders

Many Game Boy® games included special borders designed for the Super Game Boy accessory. Playback can display these borders while you play.

Enabling borders

  1. Start your game
  2. Go to Settings > Emulator
  3. Enable Use Super Game Boy Borders

When enabled, games that support SGB borders will display them automatically.

Color palettes

Original Game Boy games were designed for a green-tinted monochrome screen. Playback lets you customize the color palette to your preference.

Built-in palettes

Playback includes several palette options:

  • Original DMG — The classic green-tinted Game Boy look
  • Game Boy Pocket — A more neutral gray palette
  • Game Boy Light — Greenish tint of the backlit Japanese variant
  • Super Game Boy — Colorized palettes from the SNES® accessory

Custom palettes

Some games include their own color palettes when played on Game Boy Color® or Super Game Boy hardware. Playback respects these embedded palettes automatically.

Tips

  • Super Game Boy borders work best at larger window sizes
  • Disable borders for a cleaner, larger game view
  • Some homebrew games include custom SGB features
  • The palette setting only affects original Game Boy games — Game Boy Color games use their native colors
